Utah orthopedic surgeon Alpesh Patel, MD, has gotten assistance from MBA students at the University of Utah on developing a device that alerts surgeons if the esophagus or bowel has been accidentally nicked with a scalpel, according to a Deseret News report.
The students helped Dr. Patel develop a business plan for a new company, Monitus Medical, that now has capital investors on board and is about to submit the device for preliminary FDA approval.
While many universities help physicians secure patents for medical devices, the University of Utah also helps them start their own businesses. The university leads the nation in the number of tech startups, using grants and business development programs.
