Study: 1 in 4 Physicians Do Not Accept Drug Samples

A new study conducted by SK&A, a Cegedim company, reveals the average drug sample acceptance rate among physicians is 77 percent, meaning about 23 percent of all physicians do not accept samples, according to an SK&A news release.

SK&A conducted a telephone survey of nearly 169,000 medical offices representing approximately 480,000 physicians in 56 therapeutic specialties.

Other findings of the survey include the following:

  • Sixty-eight percent of physicians prefer samples to be delivered either in-person by a sales representative or mailed by the manufacturer or distributor.
  • Allergists/immunologists had the highest sample acceptance rate of 96% percent, followed by ophthalmologists, dermatologists and urologists (92 percent).
  • As medical practice size increased, sample acceptance rates decreased. Practices with 3-5 physicians had an acceptance rate of 76 percent while practices with 10-19 doctors had an acceptance rate of 54 percent.
