Smith & Nephew expands orthopedic surgery product portfolio with acquisition — 5 insights

Smith & Nephew agreed to acquire Brainlab's orthopedic joint reconstruction business.

Five insights:

1. The transaction includes intangible assets and Brainlab's orthopedic sales force, which will be integrated into Smith & Nephew's robotics commercial organization.

2. Smith & Nephew and Brainlab will collaborate to develop orthopedic reconstruction and sports medicine applications, and may branch into other surgical specialties in the future.

3. The acquisition gives Smith & Nephew access to Brainlab's cloud computing, tracking, augmented reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, image fusion and anatomical segmentation technology.

4. Brainlab will deploy its digital surgery products to the ambulatory surgery market through Smith & Nephew's distribution network.

5. Brainlab's orthopedic joint reconstruction business develops software tools designed to improve surgeon workflow. The company's preoperative planning, intraoperative navigation and postoperative evaluation technology is used in more than 40,000 orthopedic cases around the world each year.
