URMC to participate in ACGME quality & patient safety initiative: 5 takeaways

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education selected University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center as one of eight institutions to participate in the "Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments" initiative.

Here are five takeaways:

1. The national initiative is designed to enhance the residency experience by emphasizing quality and patient safety.

2. Diane Hartmann, MD, URMC's graduate medical education senior associate dean, will head the research.

3. ACGME chose URMC as one of the participating institutions for its plan to integrate more than 750 residents in 80 programs into one quality and safety improvement model already in place at the institution.

4. URMC will build upon its School of Medicine and Dentistry and Strong's 2013 initiative that developed the Unit-based Performance Program in 42 hospital patient care units. Led by a faculty medical director and nurse manager, a UPP team focuses on quality and safety to enhance patient outcomes.

In 2015, about half of the UPP teams decreased three types of hospital-acquired infection cases in their units by at least 10 percent compared to the year prior.

5. URMC plans to integrate its residents into the UPP teams, exposing them to quality and safety measures across all hospital specialties.
