Tick-borne infection infecting people in US — 7 facts to observe

People are being hospitalized due to tick-borne disease infection.

Here are seven facts about the disease:

1. The tick-borne infection is being considered comparable if not worse than Lyme disease as more patients are likely to be hospitalized.

2. The disease was named Borrelia miyamotoi disease by Japanese researchers who discovered the infection.

3. Philip J. Molloy, MD, medical director at IMUGEN, claimed that 25 percent of the participants in his initial study were hospitalized because they appeared to be sicker than those with Lyme disease.

4. Dr. Molloy and fellow colleagues tested blood samples from 11,515 patients admitted to emergency rooms, urgent care clinics and primary care offices in New York and New England Area who described symptoms indicative of a tick-borne illness.

5. Symptoms of the disease may include high fever, chills, headache and muscle or joint paint.

6. Dr. Molloy provides hope for patients by stating the infection is susceptible to the same antibiotic that kills Lyme bacteria.

7. This infection typically affects patients late in the summer. Therefore, physicians should be on the lookout in August.
