Survey: 11% of Pharmacists Reported Contamination of High-Risk Compounded Sterile Products in Past Year

Thirteen percent of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians reported that contamination of high-risk compounded sterile products occurred in their facility in the past year, according to a survey by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.

Four hundred twelve pharmacists and pharmacy technicians responded to an ISMP survey in November and December 2012 on high-risk compounded sterile products, defined as those where non-sterile ingredients or a non-sterile device is involved in the preparation and terminal sterilization is required before use.

Here are some key findings from the survey:

•    Eleven percent of pharmacists and 29 percent of pharmacy technicians reported contamination of high-risk CSPs in the past year.

•    Only 50 percent of all staff pharmacists and 38 percent of pharmacy technicians were confident that contamination of high-risk CSPs had not occurred in the past year.

•    Eighty-one percent of respondents believe state pharmacy boards should require technicians who work in sterile compounding to be certified or licensed after successful demonstration of proficiencies in sterile compounding.
