Researchers Identify Major Barriers to Adherence to Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines

A study published in the American Journal of Infection Control describes and measures major barriers to optimally adhering to infection control guidelines, according to the study's abstract.

Researchers conducted in-depth interviews to develop a questionnaire for microbiologists, infection preventionists, public health physicians and public health nurses. When at least 33 percent of surveyed participants responded "strongly agree," "agree," or "rather agree than disagree," a barrier was defined as "often experienced."

Results from the surveys suggested adherence to infection prevention and control guidelines was compromised due to lack of imperative or precise wording; lack of easily identifiable instructions specific to each profession; lack of concrete performance targets; and lack of timely and adequate guidance on personal protective equipment and other safety measures.
