Political views may impact perception of healthcare quality — 5 highlights

Journal for Healthcare Quality found political views may impact a person's perception of the care they receive. However, the study found no differences between parties' personal experiences within the healthcare system, according to Medical Xpress.

In the study, researchers analyzed nearly 1,500 responses on healthcare attitudes and personal experiences. Respondents were asked about their party affiliation and whether they were sick or healthy.

Here are five highlights:

1. Republicans were less likely than Democrats to view healthcare quality as a "somewhat or very serious problem." Within the healthy group, 57 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of Republicans said quality was a "somewhat or very serious problem," compared to 70 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of Republicans in the sick group.

2. Participants in all groups found healthcare's main issues to include affordability of needed tests or drugs as well as health insurance companies' impact on treatment decisions.

3. Within the healthy group, 66 percent of Republicans and 20 percent of Democrats said excessive government intervention contributed to a lack of healthcare quality. However, in the sick group, 40 percent of both Republicans and Democrats said regulation played a part with quality issues.

4. Among respondents who had a recent hospital stay, 80 percent of both Democrats and Republicans were satisfied with their care.

5. Researchers noted study limitations include utilizing a one-time survey and using self-reported healthcare experiences rather than more objective quality outcomes.
