Pediatric Patients Need Different Quality Measures for Infection Prevention, Treatment Than Adults

Commentary in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests a need for pediatric-specific quality measures for infection prevention and treatment, according to a news release.

Current surveillance definitions by the CDC and Prevention/National Healthcare Safety Network for healthcare-associated infections in children and adults are generally the same. However, rates of central line-associated bloodstream infections, surgical site infections and respiratory viral infections are different for children and adults, according to the release.

The authors of the report promote developing and implementing HAI prevention standards specific to pediatric patients.
