Patients of Illinois eyecare, ASC business notified of malware attack

The data systems of a Downstate Illinois eyecare and ASC business were breached by an unauthorized person April 18, its patients have been informed.

Malware was introduced into some of Quantum Vision Centers and Eye Surgery Center's systems, based in the village of Swansea. The malware encrypted some files, including those on a server containing patient health information, the company said. The data affected may include patients' Social Security numbers, names, addresses and health insurance coverage.

Quantum said there is no evidence that patient information was acquired through the malware, but the possibility cannot be ruled out. Patients who may have been affected have been notified via mail.

The business said it is taking steps to prevent another malware attack, including hiring a third-party forensics firm to investigate the incident and deploying backup measures to recover the data. Patients affected are being provided one year of free credit monitoring.
