The guide was developed by Cynosure Health for the HRET Hospital Engagement Network, which supports CMS' Partnership for Patients initiative. The guide includes the primary drivers of VAP prevention and the ABCDE Bundle, which includes the following elements:
A: Awakening trials for ventilated patients
B: Spontaneous breathing trials
C: RN and respiratory therapist coordination to perform spontaneous breathing trials by reducing or stopping sedation to awaken the patient
D: Standard delirium assessment program, including treatment and prevention options
E: Early mobilization and ambulation of critically ill patients
