The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Innovations Exchange offers a free toolkit on caring for diverse populations from the Industry Collaborative Effort Cultural and Linguistics Workgroup.
ICE, a multidisciplinary team of providers, health plans, associations, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies, developed "Better Communication, Better Care: Provider Tools to Care for Diverse Populations" to help medical practices deliver high-quality care to populations with different backgrounds and beliefs.
The toolkit includes resources in four areas:
• Interaction with a diverse patient base. This section includes tips for patient interviews and strategies to identify literacy problems.
• Communication across language barriers. This section features tips for identifying and working with interpreters, among other tools.
• Understanding patients from various cultural backgrounds. This section includes information on different cultural backgrounds.
• References and resources. This section includes some legal requirements and other resources to help providers deliver high-quality care to all patient populations.
