The Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety offers a free checklist to prevent errors related to patient-controlled analgesia pumps that harm patients.
The PCA Safety Checklist focuses on the top three risks of PCA pump errors based on data collected from clinical professionals:
1. A patient can potentially receive too much medication.
2. Injury and death can occur even if there are no errors with the pump.
3. Oximetry monitoring may not be sufficient.
The checklist is not intended to be comprehensive but instead to remind providers of key processes when initiating and assessing use of PCA pumps, according to PPAHS.
