Des Moines-based Iowa Health System offers a free Always Use Teach-back! toolkit to help healthcare providers assess patients' understanding of medical instructions.
The toolkit was developed by the IHS Center for Clinical Transformation, Health Literacy Iowa and Des Moines University, and is supported by a grant from the Picker Institute.
The toolkit is an online resource to help improve health literacy by teaching healthcare providers to have patients or family members repeat back in their own words instructions for improving or maintaining their health. The toolkit includes an interactive learning module, coaching, readings resources and videos. The goal is to engage patients in their care and avoid misunderstandings that can lead to adverse health outcomes for patients and high healthcare costs.
