The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers three new complimentary resources to prevent bloodstream and other infections in outpatient hemodialysis patients, according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
The resources include the following:
1. A provider training video. This 11-minute video features five segments on best practices for preventing infection in patients with catheters, fistulas or grafts, as well as segments on hand hygiene, glove use and dialysis station disinfection.
2. A provider poster. The 11x17 poster, "Put Together the Pieces to Prevent Infections in Dialysis Patients," highlights nine ways to prevent infection in dialysis patients:
• Engage patients
• Reduce catheters
• Perform hand hygiene and change gloves
• Catheter care
• Vaccinate staff and patients
• Disinfect the dialysis station
• Track infections
• Follow safe injection practices
• Use aseptic technique
3. Patient pocket guide. The two-sided pocket guide includes six tips to prevent dialysis infections for patients with catheters and six tips to prevent dialysis infections for patients with fistulas or grafts.
