Sunrise, Fla.-based American Anesthesiology has developed a patient safety initiative at its Atlanta practice using proven techniques from the aviation industry.
The group's Patient Safety Initiative helps ensure a culture of safety throughout the preoperative process by drawing on aviation's tested crew resource management training, encompassing teamwork, communication, clearly defined roles, situational awareness, debriefing, checklists and permission to challenge.
"In both aviation and healthcare, safety is crucial in protecting lives and the need to be consistent and manage the unexpected is a constant," said Jeff Shapiro, MD, medical director of American Anesthesiology's practice at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, in a news release.
The group plans to roll out the initiative to its 1,475 anesthesia providers in eight states.
