Sherrie Dornberger, RNC, executive director of National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration, recently spoke with McKnight's Long-Term Care News about infection control in post-acute care.
Here are four things to know:
1. Between 1 million and 3 million infections are reported each year in long-term care. The most common infections are urinary tract infections.
2. Ms. Dornberger attributes the prevalence of UTIs to low compliance with hand hygiene.
3. At present, there is only a 40 percent hand hygiene compliance rate.
4. For those who prefer alcohol-based handrubs, she emphasizes that the sanitizers should consist of 60 to 90 percent alcohol concentration.
