James Stoll, MD, has accused Columbia St. Mary's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis., of prioritizing new hospital construction over infection control, according to a WISN news report.
Columbia Hospital closed in 2010 after merging with St. Mary's Hospital. Dr. Stoll began voicing his allegations in 2008, blaming Columbia Hospital's budget cuts for an increase in bacterial infections. The infection control budget cuts were made in order to help finance construction plans for the new $400 million Columbia St. Mary hospital campus, he said.
Dr. Stoll was placed under a gag order when he first came out with the allegations in 2008. He is now participating in a lawsuit filed by a former patient who is accusing the hospital of dirty surgical instruments that caused her MRSA infection.
The hospital has not made any public comments on the case, but hospital experts said there is no evidence confirming a dirty surgical instrument was the cause of the patient's MRSA infection.
