Joint Commission, Pfizer to Offer Antimicrobial Stewardship Grant

The Joint Commission announced it is collaborating with Pfizer Medical Education Group to offer a grant for antimicrobial stewardship programs.

The Joint Commission and PMEG issued a request for proposals for antimicrobial stewardship programs aimed at containing and preventing antimicrobial resistance as well as supporting appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. The organizations define antimicrobial stewardship as "a systematic, evidence-based approach to the use of antimicrobial agents in order to achieve optimal outcomes," according to the release.

The approach should include using the right agent, the correct dose, correct route of administration and appropriate duration to prevent infection without creating antimicrobial resistance.

Interested organizations should submit a letter of intent for the grant. If the letter is accepted, organizations will then submit a full grant proposal. The Joint Commission will oversee a proposal review committee, and Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company, will provide all grant funding.
