Integrated recovery pathway improves patient outcomes, experience — 5 things to know

The implementation of an integrated recovery pathway and other organizational changes resulted in improvement of patient outcomes and experience for those undergoing colorectal surgery, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.

Here are five things to know:

1. The integrated recovery pathway expanded on pre-existing unit-based safety program infrastructure. It also used a trust-based accountability model at each level from senior leaders to frontline staff.

2. Eleven months of pre-and post-pathway outcomes were compared.

3. At baseline, 310 patients underwent surgery the mean length-of-stay was seven days and the mean surgical site infection rate was 18.8 percent.

4. Post-implementation of the pathway, 330 patients underwent surgery where the mean LOS was five days and SSI rate was 7.3 percent.

5. Also, patients experience improved and variable direct costs decreased.
