Infection Control Programs On the Rise But Still Face Major Challenges

Research results showed although more healthcare organizations are implementing infection control programs, there are still major challenges that need to be addressed, including lack of funding, according to a study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Key findings from the researchers include the following:

•    Seventy-three percent of respondents reported their organization already had or was planning an infection control program, up from 50 percent reporting the same thing 10 years ago.
•    Lack of funding and lack of personnel were the most commonly cited barriers to implementing a program.
•    Only 52 percent of respondents with an infection control program said their infectious diseases physicians are not compensated for their participation in an infection control program, even though it is highly recommended they are compensated for their participation.
