Trust for America's Health, Infectious Diseases Society of America and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Center for Health Security released a report recommending system-wide preparedness for emerging infections.
Here are three key notes:
1. The report calls for additional steps to prepare for MERS-CoV and other emerging infections.
2. Some key actions in the report include: Strengthen communication strategies; routinely taking complete travel histories upon intake and being prepared to promptly isolate potential cases needing evaluation; and incorporating health alerts into practice.
3. In 2014, the United States had two imported cases of MERS and while these were quickly treated, the country must prepare for any additional cases as more Americans travel to the Arabian Peninsula.
