Florida's All Children's Hospital Contacts Patients After Employee Dies From Infection

All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., is contacting all patients who came into contact with an unnamed employee who recently died from a bloodstream infection that can lead to meningitis, according to a St. Petersburg Times news report.

The outpatient therapist's infection is one that is often fatal. The bloodstream infection can lead to inflammation in the brain and spinal cord. Hospital officials said the probability of transmission, which is only through direct contact, is minimal. The hospital was not aware the therapist was sick until she called into the facility on Monday, citing the flu, according to the news report.

The hospital is offering antibiotic therapy to patients and family members who came into contact with the therapist.
