Howard A. King, MD, and Kevin G. Shea, MD, gave tips on how they cut infection rates in AAOS Now.

With a focus on orthopedic and neurosurgery, the physicians led a team for Project Zero, which focused on making surgical site infection a "never event." Their effort included:

•    Reduce OR traffic
•    Limit OR door openings
•    Comply with Surgical Improvement Project measures for antibiotic administration
•    Reduce variation among surgeons by improving postoperative protocol
•    Adopting uniform policies and changing surgical attire
•    Improved communication among surgical team

The project was able to reduce SSI rate by more than half in 18 months.
