Child Patient Infected With Hepatitis C After Transplant at Children's Hospital Boston

A child has been infected with hepatitis C after receiving an infected donor’s heart tissue at Children’s Hospital Boston, according to a WBUR report.

The adverse event has been attributed to inaccurate testing and communication delays, according to the report.

"If appropriate and accurate testing had been used, then these cases would have been prevented," said Matthew Kuehnert, MD, a Centers for Disease Control director. "In this case, there was a laboratory error which resulted in a test being read as negative when it was positive."

The hospital has since released a statement calling the incident "unfortunate" and said it will develop a treatment plan for the child.
