The CDC has updated its guidance on prevention and control of carabapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae, a family of germs resistant to antibiotic treatment.
The update revises guidance first issued in March 2009. The CDC issued eight core measures for acute-care and long-term care facilities to prevent CRE:
1. Hand Hygiene.
2. Contact precautions.
3. Healthcare personnel education.
4. Use of Devices.
5. Patient and staff cohorting.
6. Laboratory notification.
7. Antimicrobial stewardship.
8. CRE Screening.
