Officials from the state's Department of Public Health reviewed the hospitals' 2011 infection data and compared those to medical lab and patient records. They found that hospitals failed to report approximately one-fourth of C. difficile infections; one-third of central-line infections; and one-fourth of VRE infections.

State officials are using the data to educate hospitals on how to improve their infection surveillance programs.
