Patients infected with C. difficile may experience increased length of hospital stays, according to research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
For their study, researchers conducted a retrospective observational study of hospital admissions occurring between July 1, 2002-March 31, 2009 at one hospital. Using Kaplan-Meier methods and a Cox multivariable proportional hazards regression model, they measured possible links between hospital-acquired C. difficile and length of stay. Their analysis showed patients with hospital-acquired C. difficile experienced a median length of stay six days longer than patients who did not acquire the infection.
