The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the ASHP Foundation have offered up guidelines on outsourcing sterile compounding services, following a deadly outbreak of meningitis caused by contaminated steroid injections.
The guidelines recommend that hospitals engage in due diligence and carefully review prospective compounding pharmacies. The document highlights key components to include in requests for proposals, including:
• Minimum experience requirements
• History of results of regulatory or accreditation surveys
• Proof of professional and general liability and workman's compensation insurance coverage
• Evidence of qualified staff who are licensed or eligible for license by federal, state and local agencies
