Medical schools and residency programs are increasingly offering art classes to medical students that are designed to help students improve observation and communication skills, according to a Boston Globe blog post.
One study, recently published in Academic Medicine, showed an art program at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio designed for medical and nursing students helped improve participants' observation skills, increase tolerance for ambiguity and increase interest in learning communication skills.
The authors suggested the outcomes of such art programs could ultimately lead to improved patient care.
