AHRQ grants $52M to Dartmouth, NBER, RAND

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality plans to fund three "Centers of Excellence" to study how high-performing healthcare systems promote evidence-based practices in delivering care. The three grants, totaling about $52 million over five years, will be granted to Dartmouth College, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and RAND Corporation.

The Centers will identify characteristics of health systems that successfully disseminate and apply evidence from patient-centered outcomes research, and researchers will then analyze connections between dissemination of this research, patient health outcomes and effective use of resources, according to a release.

Elliot Fisher, MD, MPH, is the principle investigator for Dartmouth College, in collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley, Harvard University and the High Value Healthcare Collaborative, including 18 systems. They will work to understand how market and organizational factors influence the implementation of biomedical, delivery system and patient engagement innovations.

The principle investigator for the National Bureau of Economic Research will be David Cutler, PhD, Harvard University and NBER, in collaboration with the Health Research & Educational Trust and the Network of Regional Healthcare Initiative. NCER will work to creating a national database to identify U.S. health systems, their characteristics and outcomes.

Cheryl Damber, PhD, of RAND, will work in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University to understand the role of incentives, health IT and organizational integration within systems.
