6 Evidence-Based Practices Reduce S. aureus Bacteremia Mortality

A bundle of six evidence-based practices reduced mortality from Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, according to a study in Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Six evidence-based quality-of-care indicators to manage S. aureus bacteremia were identified from the literature. Twelve tertiary Spanish hospitals implemented a bundle that included specific, structured, individualized written recommendations for these six practices:

1. Follow-up blood cultures
2. Early source control
3. Early intravenous cloxacillin for methicillin-susceptible isolates
4. Adjustment of vancomycin dose according to trough levels
5. Echocardiography if indicated
6. Appropriate duration of antimicrobial therapy

The bundle was independently associated with improved adherence to the first three and last practices as well as decreased 14-day and 30-day mortality.
