5 points on primary care physicians failing to communicate genetic results with patients

An Impact of Personal Genomic Study Group report found many primary care physicians are either unwilling or unable to communicate with patients about their genetic test results, according to Fast Company.

Here are five points:

1. The report found 18 percent of patients were "not at all satisfied" when physicians discussed their results.

2. More than 25 percent reported feeling as if their primary care physicians did not understand genetics well enough to advise them.

3. Various patients reported the appointment felt rushed.

4. However, more than 90 percent of patients reported a few of the tests' results could enhance their overall health.

5. The Obama administration has strongly supported "personalized medicine," which entails collecting a wealth of genetic information from American volunteers to foster genetic-based treatment development. However, many providers are skeptical, which may, in part, be a product of lack of education on genetic tests.
