5 MRSA Infection Risk Factors for MRSA-Colonized Patients

One of the biggest risk factors for developing the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection among patients colonized with MRSA is a stay in the intensive care unit, according to a study in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.

Researchers studied 75 patients colonized with MRSA from January 2003 to August 2011. Other risk factors for MRSA-colonized patients developing MRSA include the following:

• Transfer from a nursing home
• Prior history of MRSA
• Experiencing respiratory failure
