Experts at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine have proposed a framework for use of electronic health records in relation to patient safety.
Although EHRs have been introduced to improve cost, safety and efficiency in healthcare, the technology also poses new hazards to patient safety. Researchers formulated a three-pronged framework to help mitigate the risks stemming from health IT:
• Ensure the EHR technology itself is safe
• Ensure the application and use of the EHR technology is safe
• Ensure the technology is used to monitor and improve patient safety
