The American Medical Association released new policies related to artificial intelligence at its 2019 annual meeting this week.
1. The AMA encouraged oversight and regulation of AI due to risk of harm to patients and its potential to treat patients. It supports payment and coverage of healthcare AI systems on the condition they are regulated by federal and state laws.
2. It opposes payer, hospital and health system policies that require the use of healthcare AI systems for payment, licensure or coverage. It opposes insufficient payment from payers for healthcare AI systems.
3. The AMA said it will work to find areas of medical practice where AI would help achieve optimal clinical outcomes at a lower cost and develop practice guidelines for AI systems.
