3 things for ASCs to know about surgical site infections

Here are three key studies on surgical site infections:

1. How one ASC increased surgical site infection surveillance rates
Research published in the American Journal of Infection Control examined how electronic survey implementation affects surveillance of surgical site infections in ASCs. Researchers created an electronic database that emailed surgeons a monthly survey regarding patient infections.

2. The ASC orthopedic surgical site infection rate is low
Infection risk for orthopedic procedures in ASCs is low, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Researchers reviewed data from patients who underwent orthopedic surgery at an ASC during a period of roughly six years to find evidence of surgical site infections.

3. Models can identify surgical site infections
Research published in the American Journal of Infection Control detailed how EHRs and American College of Surgeons outcome data can help identify surgical site infections. Researchers used three data models from patients undergoing surgery at the Aurora-based University of Colorado Hospital between 2013 and 2015.
