3 sterile processing tips for ASCs

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses offered tips for sterile processing of medical instruments and devices in ASCs.

Three things to know:

1. Protect instruments during transport. Even when instruments are sterilized correctly, they can be contaminated if not transported correctly if they are being cleaned off-site. Processes should be developed where instruments aren't exposed to dust, moisture and direct sunlight when transported.

2. Clean instruments based on usage. Sterilization techniques should be adjusted based on how instruments are designed to be used. Items that enter a sterile cavity, such as biopsy forceps, are items AORN says are critical to disinfect properly.

3. Educate staff on correct protocols. Verify the skills of ASC staff that handle sterile processing and train staff as necessary.
