Where's the best place to be a surgeon? The answer may surprise you

For surgeons living in Kansas, there's no place like home. When adjusting for the cost of living, surgeons in Kansas make more than their counterparts in any other state, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The conclusion comes from a new salary-comparison tool, which takes an occupation and ranks the best place for individuals in that occupation to live based on salary and cost of living. Wage and cost of living data comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

When adjusting for cost of living, Kansas is the best place for a surgeon to live in the U.S.; Kansas surgeons make an adjusted average of $277,820.
