Nearly half of female physicians feel as though their employer does not prioritize their career growth, according to Medscape's 2024 "Fighting Glass Ceilings: Medscape Female Physician Career Tracks Report," published Dec. 11.
Around 46% of female physicians believe their career growth is not prioritized, while just 18% believe that it is.
Here are nine additional things to know about female physicians' career growth:
1. Sixty-seven percent of female physicians believe their career growth is not prioritized in the same way as their male counterparts.
2. Over half of female physicians (53%) feel as though their workplaces do not offer leadership development training.
3. Over half of female physicians (51%) feel as though they cannot access formal career mentoring.
4. About 32% of female physicians plan to pursue a promotion either with their current employer or a different employer.
5. Only 5% of female physicians find their current promotion prospects very appealing.
6. Nearly one-quarter of female physicians (23%) believe their employers would not be supportive at all of reduced hours or leave.
7. Around 33% of female physicians are not offered paid maternity leave, while 41% are.
8. The thing that female physicians most value at work is a commitment to work-life balance for themselves and staffers.
