Sturgis (Mich.) Hospital plans to reorganize to focus more on more sustainable outpatient services, according to a press release posted on the hospital's Facebook page.

1. Sturgis Hospital President and CEO Robert LaBarge said the hospital will invest more in outpatient services such as outpatient surgery and family medicine, which already accounts for 80 to 85 percent of the hospital's business.
2. The hospital is cutting 60 full-time jobs as part of the reorganization, with some employees moving to currently vacant positions, according to WOOD8.
3. The cuts are scheduled to take effect Monday, and include closing hospice, obstetric, reducing inpatient surgical and medical services, adjustments to the structure and staffing of the emergency department and closing the oncology treatment center.
“The old ways don’t work for a small hospital any longer, so we have to embrace new ways of doing things. It’s time to restructure our operations in a way that is consistent with what we believe the future of healthcare will be for rural communities,” Mr. LaBarge said in the post.
4. The cuts come as reimbursements from Medicare, Medicaid and other insurers have not been in line with increasing healthcare costs.
