A storage device stolen from Salt Lake City-based University of Utah's John A. Moran Eye Center contained personal and medical information for 607 patients.
Here's what you should know.
1. The health system learned of the theft April 3. The device contained information for patients at Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Hospital and Salt Lake City-based Primary Children's Hospital between July 1, 2014, and March 30.
2. The device contained the full and/or partial names of patients, images of their retina and medical reference numbers tying the data to patient records.
3. No financial data or social security numbers were compromised.
4. The health system informed those affected through mailed letters.
5. U of Utah Health said in a statement, "Protecting the confidentiality of our patients’ information is a core value for us. Please accept our apologies as we sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern caused by this event. U of U Health is implementing corrective measures and enhancing security in an effort to reduce the risk of an event like this occurring again."
