Private practice vs. employment: 5 points on where today's residents think they'll end up

The Medscape Resident Salary & Debt Report 2016 examined whether residents plan to become a partner or owner in a practice, or an employee at a healthcare organization.

1. Here are the statistics:

• Becoming a partner or practice owner: 22 percent
• Employment as a non-partner or practice owner: 29 percent
• May want both: 22 percent
• Not sure/don't know: 28 percent

2. Slightly fewer residents see themselves as private practice owners or partners this year than last year when 26 percent did. Employment preference was up slightly as well.

3. Men are more likely to anticipate becoming partners or practice owners than women; 27 percent of male residents anticipate independence compared with 13 percent of female residents.

4. Female residents were far more likely to anticipate becoming an employee as a non-partner or practice owner; 25 percent of men said they would compared with 35 percent of women.

5. Thirty percent of women weren't sure about their path while 26 percent of male residents said the same.
