Ohio physician sentenced, ordered to pay $260K+ for kickback scheme

Former Youngstown, Ohio-based OB-GYN Samir Wahib, MD, was sentenced for his role in a kickback scheme, WKBN reported Sept. 14.

From March 2014 to January 2017, Dr. Wahib was involved in a scheme that billed federal healthcare programs for gonorrhea and chlamydia testing.

According to the report, Dr. Wahib gave kickbacks to two co-conspirators, Michelle Kapon, MD, and Joni Canby, MD, after they sent him samples from their patients. Dr. Wahib would then submit claims for the tests.

Dr. Wahib was sentenced to four months in prison and three years of probation and must pay a $55,000 fine, along with $211,092 in restitution with his co-conspirators. In June, he pleaded guilty of one count to solicit, receive offers and pay kickbacks and four counts of receipt of kickback in connection with a federal healthcare program.
