Medical supply company owner to pay $200K for kickback scheme

The owner of a medical supply company in Spokane, Wash., has agreed to pay $224,620 to resolve allegations he participated in a kickback scheme to bill Medicare for medically unnecessary durable medical equipment.

In September 2019, Justin Leland allegedly submitted roughly 400 fraudulent durable medical equipment billing claims to Medicare, according to an Aug. 7 news release from the Justice Department.

The billing claims were ordered by physicians who solicited and received kickbacks in exchange for ordering the durable medical equipment, according to the report. Medicare paid out $112,310 for these claims.
