Springfield (Ill.) Clinic plans to lay off nearly 70 employees, according to a March 21 report from The State Journal-Register citing an internal document obtained by the outlet.

Springfield Clinic cited “a number of market forces” leading to the closure.

“These decisions were made with great diligence and only after exhausting every other option. I want to acknowledge the weight that everyone has felt over the past week. I know it’s been extremely difficult,” the system’s acting CEO, Jen Boyer, told the Register.

She noted that the system has struggled with costs since 2020 and has done everything possible to try and absorb those costs.

The system’s ASC, outpatient cath labs and urgent care locations will not be impacted by the layoffs.

Springfield Clinic cited financial challenges due to rising operational costs, insurance reimbursement constraints and economic pressures nationwide as key reasons for the layoffs.
