How games, bagels & toothpaste got this AmSurg ASC through a snow storm

When a winter storm created poor road conditions that left patients stranded at Millburn, N.J.-based Short Hills Surgery Center, staff members sprang into action.

What you should know:

1. Some patients weren't picked up from the facility, which is owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based AmSurg, until after 10 p.m. About six staff members stayed overnight, also due to the poor road conditions.

2. Employees played board games and entertained patients while waiting for roads to clear.

3. Housekeeping staff couldn't make it to the center, so other team members cleaned clinical areas, took out the trash and handled dirty linen.

4. Despite staying overnight, the staff members woke up early the next morning to prepare for patients.

5. One employee brought breakfast, toothbrushes and toothpaste for staff members who had to stay overnight.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group of caring and devoted individuals," said SHSC Center Leader Claudette Fox.
