Higher pay in specialty care attracts more PAs & NPs — 5 insights

More physician assistants and nurse practitioners are entering specific specialties instead of primary care, according to Physicians Practice.

Here are five insights:

1. A National Provider Identifier file data revealed 43.2 percent of PAs and 52.4 percent of NPs work in primary care.

2. PA training equips PAs to transition to various specialties quite smoothly.

3. Although NP training prepares them more for primary care, the industry has seen more entering gastroenterology, orthopedics and neurosurgery fields.

4. More PAs and NPs are likely starting to specialize because of the pay raise.

5. An American Academy of Physician Assistants survey of 10,000 members found:
• Dermatology PAs earn a median salary of $117,000.
• Emergency medicine PAs earn a median salary of $108,000.
• Surgery PAs earn a median salary of $105,000.
• Primary care PAs earn a median salary of $94,000.
• Family medicine PAs earn a median salary of $93,400
