Female physician compensation reached an average of $300,000 in 2023, according to Medscape's 2023 "Female Physician Wealth & Debt Report," published Dec. 5.
Specialists earn an average of $327,000, while primary care providers earn $239,000. The compensation gender gap between male and female physicians now sits at 29% among all physicians, and 20% and 27% among PCPs and specialists, respectively.
While disparities are significant, progress has been made since Medscape's 2019 report, where the gender gap sat at 25% for PCPs and 33% for specialists.
A plurality of female physicians (31%) have a net worth of $500,000, while around 25% have a net worth of $2 million to $5 million.
Only 6% of female physicians have a net worth of over $5 million, while 19% have between $500,000 and $999,999 and an additional 19% have between $1 million and $1,999,999.
