Toby Cosgrove, MD, CEO of Cleveland Clinic, withdrew his name to head the Department of Veterans Affairs under President-elect Donald Trump's administration, according to Bloomberg.
Here are three things to know:
1. While Mr. Trump's chief aides wanted Dr. Cosgrove to take on the VA role, they told Dr. Cosgrove to tell them if he would commit to the job before sending him a formal offer.
2. Fox News reports a Cleveland Clinic spokesperson told CNN while Dr. Cosgrove wanted to fill the position, he opted to remain at the Cleveland Clinic to see through several "high-profile ongoing projects."
3. Last week, Dr. Cosgrove was among several leading healthcare executives that met with Mr. Trump in Palm Beach, Fla. The other guests included Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic President and CEO John Noseworthy, MD; Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine CEO Paul Rothman, MD; and Boston-based Partners HealthCare President and CEO David Torchiana, MD.
